Laminectomy - Spine Surgery in India

Lamina is the flattened or arched part of the vertebral arch, forming the roof of the spine canal the posterior part of the spine ring that covers the spinal cord or nerves.

Laminectomy is a minimally invasive spine surgery or endoscopic spine surgery to remove the lamina. This is part of the bone that makes up a vertebra in the spine. Laminectomy spine surgery in India may also be done to remove bone spurs in your spine. The procedure can take pressure off your spinal nerves or spinal cord. Also known as spine nerve decompression surgery, laminectomy enlarges your spinal canal to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. The early signs of a nerve compression are lower back pain giving problems in bending and standing for long period. In the later stage the symptoms may include lower back pain radiating to one or both the legs. The treatment for the nerve compression can both be conservative that includes medication and physiotherapy to minimally invasive or endoscopic spine surgery called laminectomy or microdiscectomy.

Indications for laminectomy Spine surgery

Laminectomy a type of spine surgery is often done to treat spinal stenosis. This spine surgery is generally used only when more conservative treatments such as medication, physical therapy or injections have failed to relieve symptoms of back pain. The minimally invasive or endoscopic spine procedure removes bones and damaged disks and makes more room for your spinal nerve and column. Symptoms may include :

• Pain or numbness in one or both legs- You may feel weakness or heaviness in your buttocks or legs. You may have problems emptying or controlling your bladder and bowel when the condition aggreviates.

• You are more likely to have symptoms, or worse symptoms, when you are standing or walking.
